How tall is the average man? (2023)

The average height of men internationally varies by country. It may depend on biological and socioeconomic factors.

The study of human body measurements, such as weight, standing height, and skinfolds, is called anthropometry.anthropoIt comes from the Greek word meaning "human".MetrosIt comes from the word "metron", which means "measure".

Scientists use these measurements for nutritional assessment and to generate averages and trends in human growth. Designers can even use anthropometric data to create moreergonomicspaces, furniture and assistive devices.

The data is also used innational growth chartsand to help track changes in disease risk orbody compositionthat could be expected in a person's lifetime.

That's itwhywe know what we do with height. Below are numbers illustrating the average height of men.

According toCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the age-adjusted median height for American men age 20 and older is 69.1 inches (175.4 centimeters) for the years 2015 to 2016. That's about 5 feet 9 inches tall.

That number comes from data released in December 2018. The data was collected between 1999 and 2016 as part of a National Health and Nutrition Survey.

The analytical sample included 47,233men and women, all over 20 years old. Participants reported their age, race, and whether they were of Hispanic origin. The average height of 5 feet 9 inches takes all groups into account.

How does this measure compare to other countries? Let's see.

As you can imagine, the range of average heights around the world is quite wide.

And in 2016to studyshowed that Iranian men had the biggest change in height over the past century, gaining about 6.7 inches (17 centimeters).

The researchers are part of a global group of health scientists known as the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration. They explained that both biological factors (such asgenetic predisposition) and socioeconomic factors (such asaccess to quality food) may affect the pitch range.

Some discrepancies can be attributed to self-report versus controlled measurement or the ages of the people registered. Discrepancies can also be the result of:

  • the percentage of the measured population
  • the year the measurements were taken
  • data that is averaged over time

If everyone in your family is tall, chances are you are too. After all, a person's height is primarilyinfluenced by genetics. However, environmental factors also play an important role in the process.

Nutrition and a person's access to nutrient-rich foodsWhole Foods– such as fresh fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy and whole grains – can have an impact on overall health and growth. HeWorld Health Organization (WHO)explain whatmalnutritionaffects every country in the world and that children's access to adequate nutrition can affect both height and weight.

The amount of sleep a person gets during childhood and adolescence can also influence the amount of human growth hormone (HGH) released, affectinggrowth and weight.

Medical conditions that cause extreme altitudes

The extreme height is known asgigantismby the medical community. And there are several medical conditions that can lead to gigantism.

AcromegalyIt is an endocrine (hormonal) disorder in which the body produces too much growth hormone, leading to tall stature. Pituitary tumors (adenoma) can cause acromegaly. Tumors form in thepituitary glandand cause a lot of growth hormone to be released.

Gigantism is also linked to other conditions, including:

  • McCune-Albright Syndrome (MAS)
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1)
  • neurofibromatosis

At the other end of the spectrum, dwarfismis the medical term for extremely short stature. there is up from300conditions that cause dwarfism.MajorityThese conditions are genetic.

For example, acondroplasiaIt is a genetic disease that affects bone growth. People who have this condition may have a normal-sized torso with shorter arms and legs and a shorter overall stature.

Some other conditions related to dwarfism include:

  • growth hormone deficiency
  • turner syndrome(Monoxomy X)
  • hypothyroidism
  • intrauterine growth retardation

There is apositive correlationbetween height andbody mass index (BMI)in young children. This means that with a taller height usually comes a higher BMI number. an englishto studyshows that, as a person ages, there may be an inverse relationship between BMI and height, particularly in women and older adults. Basically, this means that as a person ages, their BMI may be lower on average.

However, BMI only considers height and weight. It is not a perfect measure of a person's health. There are other factors that can influence a person's weight, such as fat mass versus muscle mass.

Accurately measure your height at home

(Video) What Height Is Considered Tall?

it can be complicatedmeasure your heightat home without help. If you want to see where you stand, consider asking a friend or family member for help.

Measuring your height with a partner

  1. Move to a room with a hard floor (no carpet) and a wall free of artwork or other obstructions.
  2. Take off your shoes and any clothing or accessories that might skew your results. Remove ponytails or braids that might keep your head from leaning against the wall.
  3. Stand with feet together and heels against the wall. Stretch your arms and legs. Your shoulders should be level. You can ask your partner to confirm that you are in good shape.
  4. Look straight ahead and fix your gaze so that your line of sight is parallel to the ground.
  5. Make sure your head, shoulders, buttocks and heels are touching the wall. Due to the body shape, not all parts of your body can touch each other, but do your best. Before taking any action, you should also take a deep breath and stand.
  6. Have your partner mark your height using a flat headdress, such as a wall ruler, or another straight object, such as a book. The tool should be lowered until it touches the top of the head with firm contact.
  7. Your partner should only mark once, making sure your eyes are level with the measuring tool, carefully marking where it meets the wall.
  8. Use a tape measure to determine your height from the floor to the mark.
  9. Register your height forto the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimeter.

Measuring your height by yourself

If you don't have anyone to help you, you can still measure your height at home. Consider purchasing an inexpensive wall gauge specifically for height, or follow the steps below:

  1. Stand on a flat surface with a clear wall that doesn't prevent your body from making full contact.
  2. Stand with your shoulders against the wall and slide a flat object, such as a book or cutting board, along the wall until you can lower it to make firm contact with the top of your head.
  3. Mark under the object where it lands.
  4. Use a tape measure to determine your height from the floor to the mark.
  5. Register your height forto the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimeter.

in the office

You can get a relatively accurate measurement at home, especially if you have help and follow all the steps. However, it may be a good idea to have your height measured at your doctor's office as part of aroutine physical exam.

Equipment in your doctor's office can be better calibrated and a healthcare professional can be better trained to get the most accurate measurement.
